Rev. Ray's October 11, 2021 Devotion

“The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.” Exodus 17:1

“As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.” Psalm 42:1

It is interesting that the Lord led the children of Israel to a dry place. In our human way of thinking it would seem that God would have wanted His children to be satisfied with plenty of water. After all, Jesus offered it to the woman at the well; and Heaven advertises water from the fountain of life. Yet these people were led to a place where there was no water to drink.

The water from Aunt Clara’s spring never stopped flowing. Everyone drank from the same dipper that hung on a nail. There was no such thing as bottled water; but family did bring jugs and fill them up. How I would like to have just one more drink from that old bent pipe where mountain water filled the crock to overflowing.

We can have a bad habit of taking so many things for granted. The danger with abundance is the temptation to stop depending on God. It is not just the hungry who are told to pray for daily bread; it is also expected of those who have bread and enough to spare. We all must learn that whatever we need, we first need the Lord.

Even though they didn’t find water at Rephidim, they found a valuable supply of “LONGING” for God’s care. We all need a daily longing in our hearts. When it is not there our love for Christ and His church will soon go with it. Being led to a dry place is the right place when it turns into water from the Rock. Please do not let Covid19 and the easy availability of internet worship take away your longing for the family of God?

The Hymn says, “I have a longing in my heart for Jesus, I have a longing in my heart for Him; Although I know His presence lingers near me, I have a longing just to see His face.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
