Rev Ray’s November 26, 2021 Devotion

"After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”  John 6:12

I am so thankful for leftovers from Thanksgiving. They have their own unique flavor the second time around. A turkey sandwich is hard to beat, and how about some turkey hash?

The fact that we have leftovers is a statement of our wealth, and another reason we should think twice before we complain about things like what we cannot find at the store these days. There are so many that would think that they were at a Royal Banquet if they just had our leftovers.

It was the day after a miracle feeding of a multitude, and the disciples were having forgetful anxiety about what the Lord can do; we are often like them. Jesus said to them, “When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

What is it that they did not understand, and do we understand what they didn't? The feeding miracle began with Jesus. It was he who had compassion on the hungry crowd, while the disciples were saying, “Send them home, we do not have enough to give them even a little.” If Jesus tells us to do anything in his name, then there will be enough of whatever it takes. All that is required of us is working faith.

What else do we not understand? It was clear that the disciples did not even have enough for themselves before the miracle happened. After everyone else was full they had enough leftovers for their own feast. God takes care of his own faithful servants; He always has.

It is the day after Thanksgiving Day, sadly called, “Black Friday” that pulls us right back into the hustle. What do we not yet understand?

Grace and Peace,  Rev Ray
