Rev Ray’s November 23, 2021 Devotion
November 23, 2021, 7:07 AM

It was the first ride in an airplane, and the man was more than pleased to be back on the ground. The captain asked, “Did you enjoy your flight?” “I guess so,” the man replied, “I never did put my full weight down.”

How about us as we experience daily life with God? Have we learned to put our whole weight down on this thing called faith; or do we still think that there are some things that will fall apart if we should let go and trust the Lord?

“How many of us would have to admit that we are sometimes frustrated Christians? The Lord may bear us up on eagle’s wings, but we refuse to put our weight down and soar with the Lord. We would rather keep our troubles, aggravations, and worries in our own hands than to let them fall into the only hands that can help us: the hands of God.

Sometimes I feel like faith was easier when Pat and I started out in ministry. It has been as though that faith has stages that changed as we grew older. Our young faith was the “starting out” kind. We went into a world that we “knew not,” and it has been both difficult and greatly blessed.

It was perhaps a different kind of faith when the disciples left their fishing boats to follow Jesus then when they followed in hidden places behind his cross. “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men" is one thing; “take up your cross and follow me,” is another.

Now we have different concerns in life than when we were young.  As family and friends have increased, so have the crosses that we share. We wish that we could fix their troubles and solve each one’s problem, but we cannot. The hymn instructs us to take our burdens to the Lord and leave them there.

Taking it to the Lord has always been the easier part for most of us. It is the “leaving it there” that we may need to get better at doing. There is an expression to, “Let go and let God.” Are we ready?

When my final flight lands on that runway of gold; and the captain asks, “Did you enjoy your flight?” I want to be able to say, “Yes Lord, I did. I even learned to put my full weight down.”

Grace and Peace,  Rev Ray
