“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most-High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1

Do you have a secret place of prayer? Pat and I have often driven by what appears to be a “Secret Garden,” and wondered if it was as beautiful as we imagined beyond the hedges and iron gates.

Jesus said to the dying thief beside him, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Paradise has been described as a garden where the king walks with his friends. Remember that God met Adam and Eve in the garden during the cool of the evening.

We assemble for public worship, and it brings us great joy; but our deepest heartfelt moments often happen when we are alone with God. It is there that we abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Remember that a shadow happens because someone real is standing over us, and we are alone with God.

But you might say that even when you try to get alone and pray, the only shadow that you can see is from the thing that worries you. The key is In the word “abide.” Stay long enough in the sanctuary of God that the shadow of the Almighty will completely swallow the darkness of your fear.

The Gospel song is comforting:

“Has the darkness of night settled round you
Has your hope and your faith wavered too?
Standing somewhere in the shadows you'll find Jesus,
He's the Friend who always cares and understands.
Standing somewhere in the shadows you will find Him
and you'll know Him by the nail prints in his hand.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
